Elvira Brigitte Isn't Here by Paris Nolan is a poetic narrative following the story of a young woman whose life starts spiralling downward in an abusive relationship. Elvira Brigitte always radiated life and warmth. She was shy yet had a deep yearning to seek out the unknown. Her life turns upside down after she meets what she presumes to be the love of her life. He shares his trauma and vulnerability, which draws her further toward him. But slowly, things start to unravel in their relationship. Elvira is isolated and abused by him in every way possible. Her life becomes a living hell. Yet, no matter how much she wants to be free, she struggles to leave as his shadow follows her everywhere.
Using lyrical prose and captivating illustrations, Paris Nolan offers poetry lovers an intimate tale of love, abuse, and its ramifications. Elvira Brigitte Isn't Here is raw and beautifully tragic. It's poetic storytelling at its finest. The narrative illustrates how abuse and manipulation can alter the psyche of an innocent soul looking for love. The illustrations depict Elvira's journey in vivid detail, bringing color and life to the narrative. Nolan taps into the pain and hurt of Elvira through her poetry, breathing life into her story and making her feel like a real person you can relate to. The author also does a brilliant job of shedding light on a few vital social issues, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and psychological trauma. All in all, it's an inspiring book of poetry that I highly recommend.
