Except A Seed by Deborah Hoffman is a crime thriller unlike any you have read before. After the murder of her sister, Adlin, Dee Dee Summers, a skilled undercover police officer, is finally heading toward answers. The senseless loss of her sister has plunged her into a state of constant rage and a desire for revenge. In Oakdale, Lieutenant Tanner struggles to make sense of Adlin Summers' murder. Nothing makes sense; he has no leads to follow up on after six months. Once Dee Dee realizes that her sister's murder and the deaths of their parents may be linked, she, together with Tanner and a whole regiment of prayer warriors, takes on the greatest evil to threaten their lives and those of Oakdale. Old family secrets will come out, and miracles will come from unexpected sources. Good versus evil, but how do you know whom to trust?

Except A Seed by Deborah Hoffman is a captivating and tense read. The novel is written from Dee Dee's point of view and the third person. What drives the narrative is the focus on dialogue rather than descriptive prose. The reader follows people's conversations, garnering information from one-to-one and telephone conversations. The author uses this narration style to build tension and create an ambiance of urgency and darkness. The juxtaposition of light and dark and good and evil is central to the novel and is supported by descriptive imagery and metaphors. The title of the book comes full circle. At the end of the novel, the significance of the Seed is made clear. The novel's distinctiveness mirrors the uniqueness of its story, capturing the difference a faithful life has on all of us. This book had an emotional effect on me, and I could feel the spiritual richness conveyed by the author.
