Marisa Nicely’s children’s book, Ezer the Bagel, gives readers a glimpse into the world of a part beagle/part basset dog. Mr. Birdie is a “Friend Coach” and reminds the dogs to help each other with their challenges. When one dog sees possibly dangerous or rude behavior exhibited by another dog, the friends discuss it in an objective way. The book persuades young readers to use kinder words and exhibit quality behaviors. The group of dogs learns to function well when only two of them are present or when they meet as a group. The author has written this book to help children have more confidence, and the story is based on her own beagle/basset pet.
Marisa Nicely has penned a lovely children’s book that is certain to start important discussions between children and their caregivers or educators. Deeply linked to his friends, Ezer models good socialization skills. The dogs rely on each other in a helpful, non-judgmental way, showing a good balance of give and take in their relationships. Even though they don’t get along together all the time, the dogs value the connections in their group and work well in groups of two. Colorful illustrations accompany the text and remind children to use kind words with others and self-affirming words for themselves. Nicely focuses on friendship and cooperation and promotes language that will facilitate life-long bonds and positive self-esteem. Ezer the Bagel is a good selection for young readers who may need encouragement in finding and/or recognizing good friends.
