Whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur with multiple start-ups or a leader looking to develop their business, there is a great deal of value and wisdom in Alisa Cohn’s book, From Start-Up to Grown-Up: Grow Your Leadership to Grow Your Business. It is complete in its approach and in the amount of information it provides, with case study after case study from her own coaching of executives as well as executives’ quotes from their own experience. It gives excellent personalized examples and actual scripts on what to do in a variety of situations (located in the appendix) from hiring to firing, layoffs, and leading. The book is effectively and logically divided into three parts: Managing You; Managing Them; and Managing the Company.
In Managing You, the important aspects of being a Founder are recognized and addressed very effectively. In Managing Them, the emphasis on communication, psychological safety, building a positive culture, and hiring and firing are extremely important areas addressed. Managing the Company covers effective structuring, smooth operations, effective meeting planning, managing the board and members of the board, working with co-founders, and even virtual workplace management. Each topic is explained well with examples on how to lead your startup. Even if it is not a startup, most of the book is extremely relevant to business leadership in general. I have read many books about leading startups. However, this is the most complete and practical start-up leadership book which is explained more from a realistic and human rather than a textbook point of view. I highly recommend From Start-Up to Grown-Up by Alisa Cohn as an excellent handbook for effective leadership.
