From Twine to Gold by Rory Ursula is a fantasy story detailing the search to find family, home, and acceptance by several of the characters. During the 20th birthday ball for the twin princesses, Princess Perdita was abducted without leaving a trace. Daius, an immortal assassin, had taken her to Pine Manor. It didn’t take long for Daius and Ammiras, the guild leader, to discover that Perdita could read thoughts. Meanwhile, Princess Genevieve, Prince Carus, and the faithful guard, Zarean, were investigating all the possibilities as to why Perdita was taken and were planning her rescue. Phillis, a faun fae, had his low opinion of the government reinforced when his only friend Lazarus was killed by police officers for no apparent reason. He joined the Royal Navy, hoping to find a home. The revelations that each person received would uncover multiple hidden secrets that could affect the world.
Princess Perdita was the most prominent role player. Rory Ursula built suspense based on her ability. A romance element was introduced into the story that I didn’t see coming. The views of every character were clear as Perdita’s ability to read minds allowed me to know what the supporting personalities were thinking. I found interesting themes in the story. The monarchy wasn’t well-liked, and there was police brutality as well as conflicting religious views. These are civil issues seen in contemporary life. I felt sympathy for Daius, as knowing that he had to wear gloves so that his death touch didn’t kill anyone would be terrible. The detailed description of every protagonist was vivid, and the ordeals they encountered kept the story interesting right up to the climactic conclusion. I recommend From Twine to Gold to fantasy readers who enjoy unpredictable, dangerous stories with a touch of romance.
