Gizmo Goes to a Rodeo by Heidi Heisel is a fun, thought-provoking story for young readers. Gizmo, a cute and funny fluffy dog, idolizes Cowboy Ruff. This cowboy is a dog star in the show, The Tales of Cowboy Ruff. Gizmo wishes he were tough like Cowboy Ruff. Hence, when he hears that his idol is hosting a fan appreciation day, where he will be teaching them how to be cowboys, he jumps at the opportunity. He and many others dress up in cowboy attire to attend the event. Thus, when Jimmy Dean, the last attendee, wanders in without any western gear, he stands out. Aside from his lack of a costume, Jimmy Dean is also missing a back leg. Gizmo tries not to stare, but this event helps them to bond in a very meaningful way.
I enjoyed reading Gizmo Goes to a Rodeo by Heidi Heisel. More importantly, I strongly believe the intended young audience will also greatly enjoy this work. The story, structured as a series of short quartets in simple language, is appealing to new readers. Heidi’s writing is very well paced. I appreciate that she promotes the importance of self-acceptance. Heidi’s writing reminded me to take the time to understand those around me. The illustrations sprinkled throughout are cute and help to drive home some of the action scenes. I chuckled when I saw Gizmo tied up by his own lasso. I also appreciated all the photographs of the real-life dogs that the story characters are based on. I recommend this story to everyone, especially dog lovers.
