Black Widow White Horse by Carmine B. Littleworth follows the story of two women from very different backgrounds who form an unexpected bond. It's been a year since Mari lost her husband, Cedric, to Boston PD's brutality. Jean Stinson Lloyd, an elderly White woman, had adopted the young Black couple before Cedric's tragic demise threw their lives into disarray. Now, Mari is in a relationship with an Iranian refugee named Abdul, who is living in Turkey. However, Mari has many outstanding loans. Jean tries to help her adopted daughter, urging her to seek justice and compensation for her husband's murder. She also cautions her to be wary of Abdul. Mari must now find a way to ensure Cedric's legacy lives on while starting her own life anew.
Black Widow White Horse is a heartfelt tale about navigating grief, loss, and faith. In this novel, author Carmine B. Littleworth emphasizes a few heavy social issues that plague contemporary American society, such as systemic racism. It's a character-driven drama that leaves its mark on you. Littleworth paces the narrative in a way that ensures readers get to know the characters in depth. I found the dynamic between Jean and Mari to be very much that of a mother and daughter. Their relationship feels all the more authentic because of their distinct personalities and outlook on life. Jean is a kind-hearted woman who never hesitates to help someone in need. Her connection with Mari is heartwarming. If you enjoy character-focused stories that highlight relevant social issues, you're really going to enjoy this book.
