"Glorify Each Day" by John Banks has an unusual beginning. Eight year old Tommy tried to kill his mother’s dog in a fit of anger. The plot moves forward in time. Cheryl is talking with her therapist concerning her boyfriend. From the discussion it becomes obvious that there is something about Teach that disturbs her and yet she is drawn to him. Teach was a GED instructor. Banks shares bits and pieces of Teach’s students’ lives. Lurking in the background of this story is Teach’s secret. The reader gets a sense of evil surrounding Teach. Twice in this book Teach is asked about being a devil worshiper. Though he never admits to the fact the reader will draw his own conclusions. Despite his past sins, Teach cares for his students and desires to protect them.
I have a friend who was called Danny as a young boy, but as he matured and his life took a different path he asked to be called Dan. He once told me that Danny no longer existed. In "Glorify Each Day" the reader is aware that Tommy cannot control his temper. When he matures he takes on the name Teach in the hope of leaving his past behind. However, the past has a way of clinging to us in the background only to come to light when we least expect it.
John Banks offers his readers a unique plot with a cast of captivating characters. The plot is complex and will leave the readers pondering the message even long after closing the book.
