Grandma's Sandals by Jodie Barton is about a young boy named Long who has emigrated from Vietnam to Australia. He finds it difficult to attend school in his new country because he doesn’t speak the language, and everything he encounters is unfamiliar to him. But one day, a conversation with a tree helps Long to see that, although everything is different, it is also the same. For example, children in Australia like to play, just like in Vietnam, and nature is beautiful, no matter where it’s found. Long makes a little hot air balloon and shows it to the other children during Harmony Day at school. They ask him to make one for them. That’s the beginning of Long feeling comfortable in his new country. The book ends with a conversation between Long and his new friend Charlie, where they start to learn about each other’s cultures.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Grandma's Sandals by Jodie Barton. The story is charming and heartwarming. The author has a gifted imagination, and the lessons the book teaches apply not only to children in a new environment but also to those who don’t feel accepted by others for any reason. The illustrations by Ana Rodic are beautiful and match the text perfectly. I especially liked that the book teaches how small interactions, even just a smile, can be the start of a wonderful relationship. I also enjoyed the conversation at the end of the book between Long and his new friend Charlie because it put the lessons into practice. I highly recommend this delightful and instructive book.
