Herbal Healing for Children by Demetria Clark is a godsend for parents of children with multiple allergies, particularly when those allergies are medication related. The author takes the reader through a general explanation of the herbs which may be useful in treating common childhood injuries and illnesses. One of the most critical parts of the book deals with when and how herbal treatments should be used. There are warnings about not using herbs with the very young, and there are also urgings to work with the child's physician when attempting to treat the child with herbs.
The book is very well done. It is sectioned according to conditions, herbal treatments and explanations of the various herbal remedies which may be made at home. Herbs used as nutritional supplements as opposed to treatments are also referenced, as are tips for growing your own small herb garden. There is a glossary which supplements the information provided in the main portion of the text.
The author has done an outstanding job of introducing herbal treatments to parents who may be frustrated by traditional medication treatments for their children. As more and more children are surfacing with allergies, the herbal remedies offer an alternative means of safely and effectively treating common childhood ailments. The author is clear and definitive in her introduction of herbal remedies, and she is highly responsible in explaining to parents that herbal treatments are not an inclusive treatment which should be used while ignoring traditional medications. For parents with problem health children, this book is an informative and responsible alternative.
