Hotel Fancépants and the Very Big Problem by Jenny Alexander is a children’s fantasy for young readers. Readers are taken inside Hotel Fancépants, established by Madeleine Fancépants. Her hotel is very lavish with its marble floors and sky-high ceilings. It is frequented by celebrities, royal families, and the wealthy. She made it a point to always have a full breakfast spread for the hotel guests, from eggs Benedict to crepes and fruit parfaits. Let’s not forget the aromatic coffee. But what makes this hotel special is that each night, the coffee maker, Coffee Thyme, and espresso machine, E.S. Presso, along with their buffet table friends, come to life. There is so much tension between the two about who is the most popular. They decide to have a contest to see if people choose more coffee or espresso shots, and the sugar, Sweet Stuff, decides on the winner. But will they ever call a truce and bring peace to the buffet table?
Hotel Fancépants and the Very Big Problem is such an adorable story. Jenny Alexander is very creative in how she presents these rivalries at the buffet table. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, especially as Coffee Thyme and E.S. Presso banter. For instance, when day one of the observations begins, Sweet Stuff tells them that they tied, but Coffee Thyme remarks, “Just a fluke.” It is a refreshing touch to see that they both have human personalities and very human problems. For example, E.S. Presso lacks confidence deep down inside. He worries that maybe there won’t be room for both him and Coffee Thyme. Coffee Thyme, on the other hand, is smug and never wastes an opportunity to take jabs. Readers who enjoy similar playful, character-driven conflicts in stories such as Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins or The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt will equally love Hotel Fancépants and the Very Big Problem.
