I Wasn’t Ready to Lose You by Brady E. McGiffin is a thought-provoking exploration of grief. Asher lost his grandpa, E.R., at the tender age of nine. Ever since then, he has lived with an otherworldly silence. Shortly after his grief began, he felt a presence inside him say, “Loyalty doesn’t die with the man.” However, Asher found it too difficult to keep people in his life. He pushed away some by ignoring them, while others passed on. His best friend, Liam Foster, died in a car crash. Yet, one day, he comes across Liam in the town of Ashmere. Is that really Liam? Ash begins to question himself and the voices around him. He had chosen to forget a lot of things to protect himself, but it's now time for him to remember.

I enjoyed reading I Wasn’t Ready to Lose You. Brady E. McGiffin’s writing is a work of fiction, but it draws on his own experience of losing his grandfather at nine years old. Having personally experienced the grief of losing a loved one, I could relate to how Asher chose to cope with the pain. I am glad that Asher wears his heart on his sleeve now that he is on a journey to remember what the silence of grief stole from him. Ivy, Asher’s childhood friend, is my favorite character because of her stance when Asher tries to reconnect. I appreciate McGiffin's emotive writing style. He uses varied sentence lengths and repetition to create suspense and fuel the mystery. The story is well-paced. I recommend this novel to avid psychological thriller enthusiasts.
