Insects, Bugs & Rock 'n' Roll by Alex Brooks tells a heartwarming tale of an unexpected friendship between Spider and Fly, showing how music can bring joy, transformation, and redemption. The spider starts as a mean, grumpy creature with no friends. He’s notorious for weaving large webs and has a penchant for catching flies, treating bug-catching like a sport. One morning, after dreaming of flies, he is woken by the sound of beautiful music, which brings a smile to his face for the first time in years. However, when the music stops abruptly, he finds himself face-to-face with a fly and contemplates having him for breakfast. This encounter with Fly, whose music opens a new world to Spider, sets the stage for his transformation. Together, they embark on a journey that not only reshapes Spider’s perspective on life, but also illustrates the magic that unfolds when we embrace creativity, kindness, and connection. This unlikely duo forges a bond that transcends their differences, reminding readers that friendship and music can break down even the toughest barriers.

I truly appreciated the positive message Alex Brooks wove into Insects, Bugs & Rock 'n' Roll. The plot is simple and engaging, with Spider's transformation offering hope and redemption. The pacing is quick enough to keep young readers hooked while allowing moments for reflection on Spider’s change. The action, especially during the band’s world tour, beautifully highlights themes of friendship, forgiveness, and the transformative power of music, keeping the story lively and entertaining. Spider and Fly are both relatable and charming characters. Spider, initially depicted as the stereotypical "mean" spider, convincingly undergoes a transformation that shows his vulnerability and desire to change. Fly, who sparks this change, is shown as a fun-loving, talented musician who believes in the goodness of others. This delightful story encourages children to believe in the possibilities of change, the value of second chances, and the joy that comes from helping others. The lovely illustrations by Hannah Worsley help to drive home these messages.
