It's All In The Lyrics: How Music Helped Me Heal and Find My Voice by Tony Kessel is a memoir that chronicles Kessel's transformative journey through music, beginning with a Garth Brooks concert. The experience ignites a year-long project where he creates a song-a-day playlist, mixing significant life events with musical musings. Throughout his memoir, Kessel speaks on his family turmoil, including his father's addiction and the impact of his upbringing in foster care. He shares the hardships he was up against during adolescence and college, leading to a pivotal decision to join the Army. After deployment, his return home and reintegration into civilian life was rife with buried trauma and the responsibilities of family. Music has served as a critical outlet for healing, helping Kessel through relationships, mental health issues, and, ultimately, in finding his voice.

Tony Kessel takes the genre of memoir writing and adds some musical secret sauce in It's All In The Lyrics, sharing the therapeutic power of music and a message that resonates on multiple levels. Putting one's life out into the universe is a courageous act, especially to the degree that Kessel divulges. The writing style is conversational and heartfelt, drawing readers in with candid discussions on events such as his near-fatal suicide attempt, and the impact of his children's health crises, revealing a raw vulnerability that makes it feel like a friend having a serious chat. Kessel is relatable and, perhaps more importantly, he is likable. We care about what he has to say because he does. And then, there's the music. So much music! Overall, this book offers a powerful testament to the healing potential of art and the importance of seeking support, making it an inspiring read for anyone facing their own battles. Very highly recommended.

It’s All In the Lyrics is a unique memoir by Tony Kessel, who is a full-time member of the New Mexico National Guard, but is also a certified mental health coach, an aspiring music enthusiast, an artist, and a nerd with a home studio. Tony passionately uses music to contextualize the significant and watershed moments of his life. He refers to several artists from different genres and uses their songs to customize his experiences. From country music icon Garth Brooks to Nirvana, Elvis, and The Beatles or from Juice Newton to Celine Dion, Taylor Swift or Mindy McCready, or even Cat Stevens to Marilyn Manson, Seether, Metallica or Weird Al, many artists have accompanied him through his life. The purpose of his experimental format was to reclaim his life, talents, and purpose and to show the healing power of music relating to the mind, spirit, and body especially when facing challenges, or when feeling 'out of tune', so to speak.

It’s All In the Lyrics demonstrates the emotional resonance and therapeutic potential of music for a personal healing journey. Music serves as a catharsis and also restructures the mind to gain insights, creativity, and self-awareness. Each note, word, or syllable strikes a chord leading to a pathway for shifting or transformation and every melody cultivates a disposition of resilience, strength, and inspiration, no matter what song or who the artist is. The universality of music made Tony Kessel feel that he wasn’t alone, especially through lyrics that made him feel part of a consciousness that defined his experience and gave him direction. The empathy gave him a sense of hope and purpose, even during the dark times. He sticks by the maxim that music is an essential part of life. It makes you whole, provides closure, and can unite people and relationships. It’s All In the Lyrics is recommended not only for music lovers and fans of memoirs but also for professionals in mental health coping skills therapy who want a good example involving the accessibility of music. Music blends with counseling therapy through the individual's effort and role in the healing process.
