Finding your place in the world isn't always easy. In Carolyn Macchia’s lyrical story, Itty Bitty Bee Leads the Way, a tiny bee named Pixie lives in a busy hive. It begins with Queen Wigglesworth announcing a challenge to the bee community. They are short on the pollen used to make bee bread for its smallest residents. Pixie struggles to see where she fits in because she thinks the other bees seem to have more important jobs. After hearing what’s going on, she decides she wants to help. So, she starts searching for more pollen. After a while, she begins to get sleepy. Eventually, she falls asleep. What happens when she wakes up? And does she find more pollen?
Itty Bitty Bee Leads the Way by Carolyn Macchia was so sweet. Pixie's struggle to find where she fits in will feel familiar to many young readers. As a teacher, I would read it to my students during a bees or insects unit. Then I’d talk with them about not giving up and what makes us all special. The kids could also research one of the different types of bees or create a bee fact book. The playful, rhyming text helps reinforce language development and keep the audience's attention. Patricia L. Brooks' illustrations are warm and friendly. My favorite one shows the itty bitty bee asleep. I loved the bright colors used and the creative way the words swirl inside the flower instead of appearing in a straight line. Children who like tales about insects will want to read this picture book. Families, teachers, and librarians looking for stories that blend science concepts with positive life lessons should add this to their collection.
