John Eyre: A Tale of Darkness and Shadow is a work of fiction in the historical romance genre. It is suitable for all ages and was penned by Mimi Matthews. The book serves as a retelling of the classic novel Jane Eyre but with the eponymous heroine replaced by John Eyre, a former schoolmaster who agrees to a position as tutor to two boys at Thornfield Hall. But secrets abound at Thornfield Hall, and chief amongst them is the perpetually tempting widow who owns the estate. But is the danger surrounding Bertha Mason of her own making, or is she a victim of some greater evil?
John Eyre: A Tale of Darkness and Shadow is a historical romance which retells Charlotte Bronte’s classic story in a way that will keep fans of the original novel totally gripped from cover to cover. One of the features which I enjoyed most about this book was the author’s ability to pay homage to a novel already familiar to many, whilst adding their own voice and perspective in a way that made the story feel fresh and dynamic. The book flows between being a mystery and a thriller whilst also playing on our expected knowledge of events, and then it weaves the romance throughout to ensure that there is never a dull moment.
Author Mimi Matthews does a masterful job of gender-swapping the characters and ensuring they have their own unique personalities rather than being simple copies. The plot is fast-paced and spellbinding, making this a book you will have a hard time putting down. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend John Eyre to fans of retellings of classic novels, and those looking for an original and modern take on a tale that’s so well known.
