Awakening is the first book in the Keeper Chronicles series by Katherine Wynter, which follows heroine Rebekah Lorek as an investigation begins surrounding the recent death of her father. Our secondary hero is Gabe McDaniel, a professional demon hunter, and that’s where Awakening really gets interesting. Rebekah’s everyday life as a B&B owner is about to be invaded by not only her ex-boyfriend Gabe, but a host of otherworldly intrigue, as it transpires that her beloved father was murdered by a creature from another world. This fast-paced mystery reminded me hugely of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, for its witty interplay (and love triangles) between the characters, as well as its high-action urban fantasy plot line. Fans of this genre of storytelling are sure to love Awakening.

I found that Katherine Wynter’s prose was classically American, and as a UK reader it took me a few chapters to get into the dialogue and grammar, but it was so worth it when I did. I thoroughly loved Wynter’s take on demonology, and the beasts she’s created are vivid and very threatening on the page. I was also impressed by the way that Awakening’s romantic plot was genuinely related to the demon storyline, and the love triangle between Rebekah, Gabe and Dylan had a fantastic twist that I definitely didn’t see coming. If you’re looking for a compelling urban fantasy read with a rich plot, romance and mystery, then look no further than Awakening. I’ll be very excited to see what else the Keeper Chronicles have in store.

Some say ignorance is bliss, but when the problems you are being shielded from surround you anyway, it can be a very bad thing. That is exactly what happens to Rebekah after her father dies and she is seduced by a stranger. Keeper Chronicles: Awakening by Katherine Wynter follows the events that dramatically change Rebekah’s life as the portal between the supernatural realm and the earth is compromised. Rebekah discovers secrets that her parents and her first love kept hidden. With both her parents dead and Gabe trying to protect her, Rebekah struggles to come to terms with the need to fight demons and protect humans from evil forces that are attempting to gain free entry to the earth. With an unusually strong demon causing a tremendous disturbance, Rebekah has to rely on the help of keepers, hunters and witches she barely knows to save her life. Has she lost everything that means something to her?

Katherine Wynter has skillfully written about an alternate reality right on our very doorstep! Without suspecting anything throughout her whole life, Rebekah is suddenly forced into the danger from which everyone she loved was trying to protect her. It is easy to sympathize with Rebekah and understand the complexity of emotions she is experiencing. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have time to come to terms with the situation and must do everything she can just to survive. Keeper Chronicles: Awakening examines Rebekah’s immersion into a new way of life and brings the reader along on this desperate voyage of discovery.

In Awakening, the first book in the Keeper Chronicles, an urban fantasy novel by Katherine Wynter, twenty-four-year-old Rebekah Lorek’s father turns up dead, the victim of an apparent animal attack. But when her ex-boyfriend Gabe McDaniel shows up to investigate, things turn out to be more than what they first appear and we are sucked into a world full of witches, demons, and demon hunters. It's a world Rebekah knows nothing about, and a world her father hoped she never would. It's too late now and Rebekah must harness her newly burgeoning powers as dark and supernatural forces prepare to converge on her and use her as the linchpin in their diabolical plan. The only question is, can she and Gabe find the demons before it's too late?

The Keeper Chronicles: Awakening by Katherine Wynter is a fast-paced urban fantasy thriller nestled firmly in the realm of New Adult, so a lot of the plot points and character interactions were fairly easy to predict. But even though I knew where the story was going from the very first chapter, Wynter's writing style still managed to keep me engaged throughout the whole story. Awakening packs in the action from the very first page with a violent storm ripping through Rebekah's small town. It doesn't let up either as Wynter adds romance, mystery, and an interesting origin story for demons and demon hunters to create a book that is sure to keep fans of Jocelyn Drake and Jaye Wells happy and hungering for more.
