Knowledge and Wisdom by Nges Elmer is a philosophical book that carefully distinguishes knowledge and wisdom, defining knowledge as the rational pursuit involving intuition, effort, and morality, while wisdom centers on moral judgment and self-correction. He speaks on education as a lifelong integration of intellect, character, and values, crucial for national growth and social justice. Elmer talks about the family’s role in instilling discipline, with schools and churches complementing moral and intellectual development. He portrays teachers as the shapers of curiosity and character through creativity and collaboration with parents. Referencing thinkers like Socrates, Napoleon Hill, Gandhi, Maya Angelou, and Malala Yousafzai, Elmer leans into education’s role in cultivating self-control, freedom, service, and social advancement, championing continuous learning, research, and the power of thought in molding destiny and culture.
Knowledge and Wisdom: Educational Thoughts from Legends to Boost Your Success by Nges Elmer is a well-organized and excellent collection, and Elmer’s writing is thoughtful and concise, mapping out all of his ideas clearly and intelligently. Interestingly, Elmer turns his attention to the significance of the Church as an educational partner, focusing on its contributions to spiritual and moral formation. I think for readers who are more spiritual than religious, or with different faiths, including alternatives, this book would appeal to a larger readership. I enjoyed Elmer’s discussion of books and libraries, and their enduring importance in cultural preservation and imagination. As a whole, we seem to have turned away from these in a digital world, so having an author point to their value is wonderful. Overall, this is a purposeful and well-supported work, pulling together the best ideas from respected thinkers. Recommended.
