Lonely Fellow’s Rhymes by Aleksandr Alexandrovich is an illustrated English-language collection of poems and song lyrics that have been shaped by immigration from Belarus, family, and rhymed poetic tradition. Framed by his late wife’s toast, “To the courage to live,” Alexandrovich leans into genuine, lived experience. Cry of the Soul depicts a sustained emotional connection through correspondence, using direct address and refrain as a substitute for physical presence. I’ll Break the Rules revisits an imagined meeting tied to a specific place, presenting memory as a return rather than expectation through a circular structure. In the piece She’s Waiting, romantic fulfillment is presented as a fixed destiny, reinforced through repeated metaphors and conventional rhyme. Throughout the volume, the work is paired with digital illustrations, placing visual interpretations alongside verses and positioning the memory of homeland as an ongoing presence.
Lonely Fellow’s Rhymes: Poems and Song Lyrics, Part 1 by Aleksandr Alexandrovich is a really heartfelt and thoughtful body of work. Alexandrovich tells us that this is very personal to him, but the raw honesty of everything in the collection actually feels more like it is spoken across a table, rather than on a page. While choosing a favorite is impossible, I really like the song When the Soul is at Dusk. It reads and sounds in my mind like a friend who shows up. I love the insistence on calling someone, sitting close, and listening. Moments of Time is another standout, a poem that paints parental labor plainly. Its beautiful, measured rhythm presses responsibility on the reader before time slips away. The digital illustrations are rendered in full color, and I admit I spent some extra time looking at the gorgeous oceanscape of Just a Dream? and its stunning white and blue-green jewel tones. Overall, this is a splendid collection, and I look forward to Part 2.
