Life in the Balance by Mark Joseph Doroski is the author's memoir of how he and his wife, Cheryl, pursued a lifestyle centered on part-time work, seasonal living, and extended travel between Norway, Italy, and Greece from the mid-1990s onward. He describes their relocation from Oslo to Milan in 1996, the adjustment to Italian urban and social conditions, and the addition of their dog Max, who accompanied them through frequent moves. Doroski talks about Cheryl’s handling of residency requirements in Italy and their purchase and maintenance of a steel sailboat, the Peregrine, which they used for voyages across the Mediterranean. Doroski leans into sailing, maintenance projects, residents, and other sailors, and alternating periods of life in Norway, all while juggling family and extended obligations in the United States.

Life in the Balance: When Career and Life Walk Together by Mark Joseph Doroski is a thoughtful and uplifting memoir that speaks with honesty and heart. Doroski shares moments of building a future in Europe, managing family responsibilities, and finding joy in simple routines, and he does so in a voice that feels really approachable and genuine. Doroski can do what many dream of but few dare to attempt, and successfully balances work, property projects, and family concerns while still carving out time for travel and service in his community. All this, and just how interesting it is, makes this book stand out as more than just a personal account. Readers are invited into experiences in a writing style that has a grounded quality, and there is not a single step of the journey that doesn't feel purposeful, leaving the reader with admiration for the life Doroski and his wife have chosen to build together.
