Lola’s Little Legs written by Kelly Delahanty and illustrated by Barry Davian is a gentle picture book about life after loss. Lola the corgi loves her owner, Trevor, and in turn, he gives her cuddles and care. One day, when Trevor doesn’t return home, Lola goes to live with Trevor’s sister and her children. Though Lola is sad and confused, she enjoys the love of those around her and remembers the love of her former owner. The story is told using a light rhyming style and uses language that early readers can comprehend on their own.
I highly recommend Lola's Little Legs by Kelly Delahanty to those trying to help their children understand death and loss gently. In this story, the corgi does not learn what happened to her former owner but knows that he is watching over her. For those who wish to help a child process grief without specifically mentioning the triggers of death, illness, or violence, this is the perfect story. The illustrations are beautiful - who knew a corgi could show so much emotion on her face? Like the text, the images are light and gentle; not shying away from the hardship of life after losing someone, but not overly dark or heavy. This book is at a kindergarten to second-grade reading level, but I believe this is a healthy processing book for older children and even adults who need a gentle way to wrestle through grief. I plan to share this book with the loved ones in my life.
