When Faith Is Shaken by Sallie Dawkins is a well-written book that offers hope to readers, especially during seasons of doubt, intense medical crises, unanswered prayers, and more, while guiding them through the path of recovery and wholeness. In five parts using dreams, metaphors, and tales, Sallie describes a journey of transformation that openly confronts fear, disappointments, and other difficult emotions, addressing them through faith and scripture. This journey allows for personal reflection to identify and properly manage patterns such as overreactions, triggers, and defense mechanisms adopted from past experiences or trauma. This book also contains tools and exercises for nervous system re-regulation, as well as various ways to support a loved one with chronic illness, which include using thoughtful language and being flexible with plans, among others.

As a believer in Christ, this book opened my eyes to another dimension of faith that requires holding on to your identity in the deepest times of challenges. I sincerely commend the author for using her story as a source of comfort and hope to others going through similar struggles. I found the nervous system re-regulation exercises very helpful, particularly the extended exhale breathing. I loved the summary section, Scriptures, and reflections at the end of each chapter as they made reading this book more engaging and inspiring. I loved the prayers in this book, and I commend the author for using them as a means of bringing others to salvation. The writing is well-paced, organized, and easy to comprehend. It featured themes on faith, wholeness, healing, transformation, and more. I recommend When Faith Is Shaken by Sallie Dawkins to all Christians and anyone seeking healing and restoration from any life challenges.

When Faith Is Shaken: Discovering Wholeness in the Midst of Chronic Illness by Sallie Dawkins explores the intersection of faith, chronic illness, and internal struggle through a blend of narrative reflection and metaphor-driven storytelling. The book begins by acknowledging a deep, persistent fatigue that goes beyond physical exhaustion, rooted in repeated medical encounters, unanswered questions, and the emotional toll of feeling unheard. It frames chronic illness as a physical experience that fractures trust in the body, in others, and sometimes in God. The narrative examines how individuals can become internally divided as they try to maintain composure and belief. Early sections introduce metaphors such as a heavy coat representing accumulated emotional burdens and invisible “buttons” that trigger intense reactions tied to past experiences of dismissal. These stories illustrate how the nervous system holds onto past threats, even in present situations that are no longer dangerous.

Sallie Dawkins uses a calm, reflective writing style that leans heavily on metaphor and gentle repetition. Rather than presenting direct instructions, she invites reflections through questions and scripture passages at the end of each chapter, encouraging personal and contemplative reading. The language is clear and grounded, often focusing on the body’s responses and internal dialogue, which helps translate abstract emotional and spiritual concepts into something tangible. Readers who appreciate introspective works that combine faith with psychological awareness will find this approach especially engaging. The structure allows for reading in small sections, making the book one to be read at once or at leisure. When Faith Is Shaken will appeal to readers who enjoy thoughtful, spiritually grounded writing that emphasizes inner reconciliation and steady faith.

When Faith Is Shaken: Discovering Wholeness in the Midst of Chronic Illness by Sallie Dawkins is a collection of metaphorical stories highlighting the journey of living with a chronic illness. The book shows the real struggles Christian believers deal with—things like shaky faith, feeling pulled in different directions, and plain spiritual exhaustion. On top of that, there is often a disconnect with doctors and fellow believers who just do not get it. Dawkins shares stories, like the woman who walked around feeling like she wore a heavy, invisible coat—her way of protecting herself when nobody listened. She shares a story about noisy ducks and draws a lesson about setting boundaries from it, and talks about a studious woman who surrounded herself with books for safety but later realized she needed rest. The book covers familiar tales like that of the princess and the pea, as well as powerful tales about grief, forgiveness, self-discovery, and finding peace in God’s ever-present companionship.

When Faith Is Shaken is a much-needed read for Christians who are living with chronic illness. This book answers pressing questions about what happens when you are in pain, seeking answers, and no one believes you; when you have prayed for healing and are confronted with silence; and when you have done your due diligence, researched, followed health plans, and still find no relief. Sallie Dawkins has not generalized this book to a single situation, but to multiple issues one might encounter on their health journey. The book is a great reminder that Christians will always face discomfort and hardships, and holding on to God during these challenges will strengthen them and help them grow. God cares about the body, soul, and spirit, and He is near to the brokenhearted. Reading the stories reminded me of the parables that Jesus used to convey His messages. There is a summary at the end of every story where Dawkins explains what you are supposed to gain after reading it, together with Bible verses and questions for reflection. Overall, this book invites readers to embrace their worth, advocate from a place of unity, and find peace amid uncertainty, recognizing that their wholeness was never revoked.
