RC and JP Carter’s Magic Beneath Manhattan follows Aurora Quinn, a junior editor in midtown Manhattan, whose ordinary subway ride becomes a passage into Aeltheryn, a realm where dragons speak, and old magic governs royal war. After a mysterious conductor gives Aurora a brass token marked 4488, she steps from the train into a meadow beneath two suns. Prince Daelen of Draven Peaks finds her during a chase involving Mordrek Kaelthorn, a troll prince tied to a war over Emberstone. Aurora is taken to Castle Dravenhold, where the Quinn name carries an old prophecy, and dragons can speak through the mind. When the kingdom faces attack, Aurora’s Manhattan life collides with a destiny that may make her more than a lost traveler in a world not hers.
RC and JP Carter’s Magic Beneath Manhattan is an inventive urban fantasy, and the premise is unique. The world-building is fully fleshed out, and the kingdom feels totally lived in. The authors give us different races, and the pièce de résistance—dragons! Aurora bonds with Aurelion, a white dragon whose former rider, Aoife, has died in battle. I love the young dwarf assigned as Aurora’s squire, Fynrin, working with armor and castle protocol. Her learning means readers learn right alongside her. Aurelion is wonderful, too, and his telepathic bond with Aurora is how they grow their trust through conversation. There is a romantic element that I like, but for me, that was secondary to Aurora's arc as a city girl in an alternate kingdom with a glorious dragon. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy portal fantasy with dragons will adore this book.
