When Noah saw the news announcing the death of Dr. Martha Ortega, the leading authority on Black Plague research, he was unaware that her death would upend his life. The year is 6992, and, as it turns out, aliens are not so bad. Although humans were already a multi-planetary species having an average lifespan of a hundred years, the Hapnu's gift of sharding revolutionized human technology. The Hapnu are a friendly alien race whose sharding technology allows a person to avoid death by transferring their consciousness to a clone. But sharding tech is imperfect. It allows three mind transfers before its flaw—the Black Plague—shows up to deliver irreversible death. Dr. Ortega's assassination means that humanity's one shot at immortality has disappeared. Except the cure is another one of the Hapnu's gifts, and the key to unlocking it has been transferred to Noah. Who is Noah, and what other gifts might the Hapnu have for humanity? Read Mind Vault by Ray Clifford Martinez II to find out.

Mind Vault is the expertly crafted first book in the Echoes of the Hapnu series, and I already cannot wait for the next book. It is suspenseful, with excellent world-building, plot, and character development. The story features futuristic elements ranging from asteroid mining to space elevators and holographic adverts. The use of italics to represent thoughts and telepathic dialogue also made reading seamless. Unlike many sci-fi novels today, Mind Vault portrays an imperfect society with enough positivity to prevent the plot from having a dystopian theme. As a science fiction fan who hadn't read any sci-fi in months, the story met my expectations and is an excellent choice for readers trying the genre for the first time. What else can I say? If you want to explore the world of scientific imagination, then Ray Clifford Martinez's Mind Vault is the book to read.
