From the setting to the characters, nothing is as it seems in Mink Eyes by Dan Flanigan. Peter O’Keefe is a 'rough around the edges' private detective. He carries mental and physical scars from his time as a Vietnam war vet, but he isn’t letting that hold him back. So, when his good friend and attorney Mike asks Peter to look into a pretty straightforward case, he thinks it is a simple job to close. However, he soon realizes how wrong he is. He is now stuck in the middle of a very serious cocaine smuggling and money laundering case. Each of the clues leads him to a mob boss called Mr. Canada and he is as elusive as he sounds. Catching him is not easy, but Peter is no amateur. Along the way, he finds the girl of his dreams who is just a smidgen away from being his worst nightmare. Nothing is as simple as it seems in this case and Peter needs to rely on his years of experience to solve it. Peter needs to be very careful about who he trusts and who he doesn’t. Can Peter make it out alive?
Mink Eyes is a must-read for action enthusiasts. Peter is the perfect protagonist for the story. He is jaded enough to keep his head in the game and open-minded enough to look for clues where no one in their right minds would look. He is a unique and surprisingly charismatic character. He is sharp, he is shrewd and he is very observant. Reading this story is a whole sensory experience and that is largely due to the craftsmanship of the author. Dan Flanigan weaves pictures with his words and ensures the reader sticks with Peter until the end. The descriptions are vivid, the imagery is expressive and the dialogues are revealing. An easy read that I will pick up again.
