Nicholas’s Story by Peter K. Young is a literary novel that follows Nicholas Carter from a Chicago childhood and his mother’s overdose into a group home and a car theft crew that ends in arrest and three years in juvenile custody. Months in solitary confinement push him toward routines and notebooks that change his thinking. After his release, he earns a GED and works in a shop while studying at college and learning construction skills that include carpentry. His notes grow into books on confinement and craft; one wins a Pulitzer Prize, drawing universities and even the military into his sphere. From a Swiss trade school to the design of a coastal home, Nicholas builds a stable path through environments that rarely offer stability to those who enter them.
Nicholas’s Story by Peter K. Young is a really lovely, slow-burning story about the titular Nicholas and his rise from a genuine underdog. What Young does differently from other, similar stories is that he allows one man's life to unfold in a measured and believable manner. Nicholas does not have a meteoric leap from social services and juvenile detention into the Prince and Princess of Wales' lap. By unfolding the steps cleanly, Young shows the very hard work, dedication, and calm judgment and reliability that must occur. I enjoyed the parts tailored around his collaboration with craftsmen across Britain and Europe, and the Bainbridge Island chapters introduce fresh circumstances that still align with his consistent character. Overall, this is a well-written and carefully detailed story. Recommended.
