Nurse Florence®, Tell Me About the Skin is an educational book written by Michael Dow, RN, MS, featuring illustrations by Madrid Rosario. The book aims to teach children about the structure, functions, and care of the skin. It follows the story of three classmates—Jean, Condi, and Sonia—who discover that the ozone layer is similar to the skin because it protects our atmosphere. They learn more about the skin from Nurse Florence in their school cafeteria. She explains that the skin is the largest organ in the body and plays a vital role in protecting the body against germs and regulating temperature. Nurse Florence teaches the children about the three main layers of skin, the effects of insect bites, and various skin conditions.

Nurse Florence®, Tell Me About the Skin is a fun and engaging read that educates children about skincare. Although it is part of The Nurse Florence® series, it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book. Michael Dow uses simple language and relatable characters to make the lessons accessible and easy to understand. I appreciate that the story emphasizes the importance of protecting skin from the sun, avoiding harmful habits such as smoking and tanning, and maintaining cleanliness, which are vital lessons for both children and adults. The book includes important terms related to the skin along with pronunciation guides. The vibrant illustrations perfectly complement the story. I also love that the text is separate from the art, making it easier to read for youngsters with reading difficulties or those looking to improve their reading skills. Overall, this book aims to improve children's health literacy, encourage early skincare habits, and inspire interest in science and health careers.
