Odie is a very inquisitive dog. He loves to explore, mostly by using his nose as all dogs do. He has a new friend in his neighborhood: Phoebe. They like to explore together, but since Phoebe is new, Odie is showing her around. Together they see a hawk, wrens and other songbirds, a squirrel (of course), a green anole, a turtle, and many other creatures. With each creature they study, they learn some interesting facts. Like the turtle who will pull itself into its shell when scared and the way to identify if a turtle is male or female is to look at the color of its eyes. Then there is the marvelous oak tree which, sturdy and strong as it is, makes it the fine tree that has earned its identity as the national tree of the United States. Odie is a very clever dog. He knows a lot and he learns interesting facts whenever he goes exploring. He encourages young readers to do the same.

Donna S. Provance’s picture book story, Odie Explores, is another book in her series, A Paw Smart Book. The story follows the beloved family dog, Odie, as he explores his neighborhood with his new friend, Phoebe. Odie acts as guide and teacher, not only to Phoebe but to young readers as well. Everything he sees and smells, he shares in great detail and there are numerous colorful photographs to illustrate what he has discovered. Young readers will enjoy learning about the world around them from a four-legged friend, especially one as cute, loveable and, of course, smart as Odie. A fun way to learn. Thanks, Odie.
