Offsides by Paul Gorman is about a Russian coach who wished to build an athletic team to compete in a football game against a winning American team. The problem is, he is a hockey coach. Many people think it is a foolish idea, but he is determined. However, he has a powerful ally and friend who supports him. Using his own unique and special methods, he eventually gets the chance to build a team that will put his plans to the test. Even though a change of power has occurred in his country, there are still those in power who resist change from the old ways. Now he must not only prove his prowess as a football coach and manager, but also stop the KGB from interfering. A nerve-wrenchingly good read.
Offsides by Paul Gorman is a riveting and entertaining read that sports people and readers in general will enjoy. The plot structure is excellent. The author kept me glued to the book by masterfully crafting each scene. Readers will be as captivated as I was by how Gorman moved from one scene with different characters to another at an appropriate pace. The plot involved underestimated coaching and leadership genius, raw talent, tragedy, love, compassion, and humility. I love the whole Russians versus Americans political backdrop of the story. The characters are memorable: Mike, Wendy, Boris, and Comrade Valery Medved. The Russian antagonists, Papov and Sergei, were believable in their actions and dialogue. Medved was a great character, the unsung hero of young sportspeople.
