At 23, Aria Sutton has just become homeless. For the last time, her drug-addicted mother has been kicked out of their rental by the landlord, and she and her 12-year-old brother Ben are out on the street. She makes several calls to “so-called” friends, none of whom offer to help her. Desperate, she makes one final call to Luke Hardin, the boy whose heart she broke six years ago. Surprisingly, he lets Ben and her stay with him. As old feelings resurface, Luke and Aria both struggle with their emotions. Do they admit their feelings for each other or remain silent? Does Aria get her happy ending, or do the tentacles of the past drag her back? Read Piece By Piece: Desperate Hearts Book 1 by Twila Mason to find out.
Piece By Piece is a character-driven story with two protagonists, Aria and Luke. Switching between the two, the third-person narrative tells the story from both perspectives. This clever decision by Twila Mason engages the reader and draws them into the plot. Understanding the motives from both sides puts the reader through the same levels of emotion that Aria and Luke experience. It’s a story of hope, love, anguish, and acceptance. I cheered and cried for both of them as the story unfolded. While this is a contemporary romance, the story will also appeal to readers who enjoy plots about hitting rock bottom and trying to rebuild a life. The book is better suited for late teens and up; there’s mild cursing and references to sexual assault and death. I loved this book and highly recommend it.
