Purple Orchids by Samantha Christy is the story of Gavin and Baylor, who come from two different backgrounds yet somehow find their way into each other’s lives. They met on a college campus years ago and Gavin was instantly smitten. This total playboy was pretty much felled by a cute little brunette in a cute little track suit. They were compatible in ways they shouldn’t have been, considering their very different backgrounds, but when you’re young those things don’t matter to those in love. Samantha Christy does a really great job of illustrating how some people value lineage and bank accounts more than love and happiness. When a brutal lie tears Baylor and Gavin apart, it will be years before they reenter each other’s lives.
One of the most surprising things about Purple Orchids was how adept Samantha Christy is at writing the voice of a twenty-year-old man. At points I was rolling my eyes at Gavin because, come on, twenty-year-old guys are immature and have a one track mind! It was beautifully executed as was the second time around love story of Gavin and Baylor. The way his love for Baylor transformed him was a glorious thing to witness, and even the wildly swinging emotions was exactly what you’d expect from new adults. I like that the story switches perspectives, because in a story like this you really want and need to hear both sides. So many stars had to align for everything to happen that you know neither character could get out of it unscathed. The aftermath of the revelation was tense, emotional and heart-wrenching. This is a story worth reading and savoring.
