Niccolo Corsini is back. It’s nearing the end of the 15th century, and Lord Medici, the de facto ruler of Florence, has requested Niccolo’s help in a daring new mission, in fact, three missions. Lady Borseli, sent as a spy to the French court in Paris, has been caught and locked away in the Bastille. Medici asks Niccolo if he can rescue her. In book one of the series, the French navy stole a famous painting known as The Annunciation, and it’s now held in the catacombs of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Medici wants the painting back. Finally, while in the French court, they learn of a plot by King Charles VIII to steal one of Leonardo da Vinci’s 3-barrelled cannons so that he can declare war on Italy. Can Niccolo and his crew, nicknamed the Florentine Order, rescue the prisoner, recover the painting, and thwart King Charles VIII’s plan? Read Quest of the Florentine Order by Steven F Freeman to find out.
A lot is going on in this book, and only a master author like Steven F Freeman can pull it all together so well. I’ve been a fan of this author since his Blackwell Files series, but this historical fiction series is some of his best work yet. Niccolo Corsini is a remarkable character; he’s a merchant ship captain, yet he possesses skills that allow him to achieve incredible things. Too bad he’s a fictional character. This time around, Antonio Ruspoli is my favorite character, and boy, does he have some adventures of his own (no spoilers from me!). Quest of the Florentine Order is action and adventure from the opening page until the last, setting up book three of the series superbly. Fans of historical fiction and high-seas adventures will love this book as much as I did.
