In Rebuilding Romance From Ruins by Nicole Campbell, Genevieve, a preschool teacher and romance author, is trying to rebuild her sense of self after her divorce while trying to keep her apartment with her current income. Danny, a handyman and friend, struggles to support his sister’s family while figuring out his long-term plans and wondering how he can save some money. Danny and Gen connect at a mutual friend’s wedding. While their initial connection is built on light banter and understanding their struggles, their friendship soon grows into more. When the idea of becoming roommates comes as a solution to their financial challenges, they must figure out if they want to move their tentative friendship into deeper waters. Will Danny and Gen be able to let go of their pasts and open themselves up to new possibilities and dreams?

Rebuilding Romance From Ruins is the third and final book of the Emberwood series. While Nicole Campbell has created the entire series around the same set of characters, each book focuses on a different couple. So this book could be read as a standalone. However, Nicole has also included glimpses of the other couples, Sam and Jesse, and Lauren and Jeremy, in the story, making me want to explore their stories as well. I also loved that the story is told from both Gen's and Danny’s perspectives as it helped me get a better handle on the characters’ thoughts and motivations. The story has a balance of humor, tender moments, and dramatic turns without becoming emotionally overwhelming. While a romance at its core, the narrative also examines supportive relationships, forgiveness, and the possibility of second chances. Fans of contemporary romance will find this a relatable and rewarding read.
