Shadows of Our Sins is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres, and it forms the first installment of the Shadow Purgers series. It is intended for the young adult reading audience and was penned by author N. Phillips. In this thrilling and magical adventure, we follow our seventeen-year-old protagonist, Aliyah Dawn, as she deals with the immense grief of losing her brother. When she discovers that the shooter who killed him was under the influence of a demonic power that encourages people to fulfill their darkest desires, she begins a personal journey to protect the rest of her family and the entire city from their own inner darkness.
Author N. Phillips has crafted an absolutely superb fantasy tale that will suit the older end of the YA range, plus many adult readers seeking an exciting adventure with a fascinating conceptual plot. One of the features that I really enjoyed about this story was the commitment to character development and the core emotional storyline, which always spotlighted Aliyah and made the mixture of different feelings she experienced totally valid. The sensitive portrayal of grief and shock was well balanced against the desire for closure and the power of hope in adverse circumstances. I also thought that the gritty, urban setting mixed really well with the fantasy elements of the plot and the story still had a realistic internal logic that was well-grounded. Overall, Shadows of Our Sins is as clever as it is exciting, and it is a highly recommended urban fantasy read.
