Soft Obviousness by Alessandro Zanone is a heartbreaking memoir about loss and the process of coming to terms with what is left. Alessandro always loved his pet dogs. They gave him stability and comfort, and showed him a different perspective on relationships and connections. They became like family. After Alessandro lost his dog, Lola, he felt like something vital had been ripped from him. Most people didn’t really get it—the way grief can leave you hollow, or the guilt that creeps in. He shares stories of his childhood and the loss of his grandfather, and you can feel how the empty spaces left behind changed him. He also covers memories, the slow healing process, and the beautiful realization that the special moments, love, and presence that he shared with Lola are the most important things to hold on to and appreciate.

Soft Obviousness is a moving story that highlights the deeply personal feelings that follow after a painful loss. Any animal lover will feel the emotions through the pages, both the happy and sad. Grief is a journey of ups and downs, and this is something I noticed in Alessandro Zanone's memoir. Just when he felt like he had moved on, something brought him back. The book touches on the special relationship between humans and their pets, showing how they are not just our responsibility but can be a source of joy and a part of our life’s story. It goes beyond words, and sometimes it’s just quiet moments, instincts, or the simple act of being there for each other. For me, the heart of the memoir is this: even though loving means risking pain—because loss is always possible—it’s still worth it. Opening up, building those connections, and letting yourself care is what makes us human. This is a wonderful read that allows readers to reflect on how grief, love, and memory can coexist gently after loss.
