Stone of Matter is a work of fiction in the subgenres of fantasy and science fiction as well as providing a clean, non-graphic read, and it was penned by author B. L. Barkey. Written as book one in the Legend Of Litiguh series, this volume introduces us to the world of Proelum and our central protagonist, a young man named Ammon. With his destiny as a Guardian looming before him, Ammon faces enormous changes that are coming about in the fantasy world he inhabits, and he must navigate a treacherous path to discover who are his real friends and who are his foes. Meanwhile, Titans wage war on one another and battle for the powerful Creation Stones and the ultimate Stone of Matter.
Author B. L. Barkey delivers a superb and modern fantasy epic, one which pays homage to the old tropes of the traditional sci-fi/fantasy adventure but also goes deeper into the development of the complexities of its world and the people who inhabit it. The character creation around Ammon and those he encounters takes into account a full spectrum of emotions, and intrinsically human themes like justice, loyalty and what real heroism entails tie the fantastical plot down in emotional realism. The descriptive work on the Titans and other powerful foes and forces which Ammon faces is excellent, bringing cinematic imagery into the imagination of the reader and real tension to the action scenes. Overall, Stone of Matter comes highly recommended for epic fantasy fans seeking a unique read, and fantasy newcomers who’d like something more sophisticated from the genre.
