I'm a BIG-OLE fan of paranormal fiction/urban fantasy. I've never read anything by Marlene Perez, but I can guarantee you that I will be reading everything that I can get my hands on now. Sign me up for the next two books in the series AND I'm going to dive right into her Dead Is, (YA) series. Marlene has the delicate balance of snark, kick-ass attitude, and fascinating plot that really attracts me to the genre. It may be too early to tell, but I think I've found a new "Keeper Shelf" author.
Nyx is an immortal. When Christianity took hold of the world and the old gods faded from human memory, the gods themselves disappeared, leaving their progeny and descendants to form into houses. There are four houses in the magical world, and all of the inhabitants of said houses are descended from a god. The houses are: Fates, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.
Broody, moody, and leather-jacket toting, Nyx has everything you look for in a dark, sexy, somewhat anti-hero, and I LOVED him. The story was told in exclusively first person from Nyx's point of view, and he really takes the cake when it comes to paranormal. I am so glad that Marlene Perez decided to make her hero a male, because the genre is overrun by females, in my opinion. I need a good dose of testosterone and Nyx was it.
The sound effects of the actual audio-book were cool. There were things like whooshing winds, crackling branches, etc during the change of chapters that really set the tone of the book, overall. As for the narration, Arthur's narration of the female characters was a little silly. He couldn't really capture the nuances of a female voice. Still, he did a great job narrating and voicing Nyx, so I guess I can't complain. A solid 5!
