String of Pearls is a work of fiction in the science fiction, action, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author Scarlett Ripley. The work is intended for the young adult reading audience and upwards, and contains no graphic or explicit content. Our protagonist is Leanna, a young woman known as a Giant, who is gifted with the skill to travel through a realm of different dimensional worlds and help restore the balance between them. Alongside her beloved sister, Leanna faces trial after trial as she trains with fellow new Giants, honing her skills and experiencing the terrors of multiple worlds until she discovers that a dark threat is brewing, ready to destroy them all.
Author Scarlett Ripley has crafted a vivid and wonderous work of fiction with plenty of new concepts, interesting science, and all-out action to offer readers. Using string theory as a base for the storytelling is an excellent move, as it enables us to journey through so many ideas at once with Leanna and Violet, which keeps the story fresh and exciting. I found the character developments of the various villains, big and small, to be very engaging, but there are also plenty of monsters and other types of mental and emotional hurdles for Leanna to overcome as she takes a hard look at herself. The teen dialogue was also very effective, serving to display the unique traits of the characters and their intellect, whilst also moving the plot forward in a natural way. Overall, I would highly recommend String of Pearls to fans of high-concept science fiction, strong female lead characters, and for YA adventure fans everywhere.
