Five hundred feet beneath the permafrost of the Land of Baudheil lies a gate that imprisons an ancient evil, Xiviroth. However, the gate is beginning to strain. One of its nine locks has failed, and the others will follow suit. In Hollontown, the Clox brothers, Clogwid and Benjamin, are clocksmiths and gadgeteers who initially seek fortune, but got themselves involved in a dangerous quest with a former City Sorcerer, Sotiris. Far to the north in Raith, Arch Ministry operatives Llewellyn and Imogene run into trouble with their latest mission and have to escape.
These characters will find each other and unite by fate, and they will find more allies to aid their quest. The plot is well-paced. It was never weighed down by over exposition and there are no insignificant characters that made no impression whatsoever. The story doesn’t take itself too seriously, despite the fact that the premise involves an ancient evil which is about to bring absolute doom to the world. Aside from the exciting steampunk adventure blended with magic, there are humorous situations that make the story much more fun to read. The world-building is easy to imagine; I could picture and hear the clockwork mechanism that powers the machines and gadgets. I wish I had my own velocipede to ride.
Tales of Impending Peril: The Fires of Hexmalivus by Michael Trupiano has given the die hard steampunk fans something to look forward to in this sci-fi sub genre. Volume one of the series will provide great entertainment to readers and entice them to look forward to volume two. This is an entertaining and commendable series from Trupiano.
