This week I’ve been reading the fascinating non-fiction work The AI Playbook: Mastering the Rare Art of Machine Learning Development by Eric Siegel. As a relative newcomer to the world of artificial intelligence and its implications for the wider world, I was grateful to have the opportunity to read such a robust text aimed at helping the non-technically minded understand a deeply technical concept. The age of AI is upon us and amongst the hysteria from both those excited by the idea and those terrified of it, it’s easy to forget that AI is a tool like any other with the potential for good and ill. This book serves as an excellent reminder that AI will ultimately be what we make of it, and by taking the time to understand it, there’s a world of business opportunities awaiting us.
Any non-fiction work lives or dies on the depth of the author's understanding, and Eric Siegel very quickly demonstrates his credentials for discussing this topic before sharing a nuanced, easy-to-understand dissection of what machine learning is and how to utilize it best in the working world. Throughout The AI Playbook, the sage advice and scorching insights are carefully grounded in the real world, something which elevates the book above the abstract discussions of what AI could and couldn’t become and into a handbook on how to use this new tool to advance your business goals. It is the applicability of the information in this book that makes it so incredibly valuable for business professionals wishing to upgrade their skills for this brave new frontier.
