The Cat and the Fiddle by Cathy Farr is a cute tale of a little boy who travels in the between. Seven-year-old Max is having trouble sleeping so Dad suggests "moon dreaming." Dad tells him it is what he used to do when he couldn't sleep. He would visit strange worlds with weird creatures and have great adventures. Max is desperate enough to try anything to sleep and to forget about the scary wardrobe across the room that may or may not contain monsters. He decides to try moon dreaming. Only, Max isn't sure he's successful. When he opens his eyes, he sees Grams' tubby terrier, Randolph, standing on the roof. How did Randolph get up there? Are his paws on his hips? Can he really be talking to Max? Max decides he must be imagining things. Or is this all a dream?
The perfect book for the little boy that doesn't like to read, The Cat and the Fiddle by Cathy Farr is filled with the impossible and sometimes the extreme. At first, it looks as though Randolph's friend is crazy. Then, the reader finds out that he has been the subject of bullying. I found the story to be a great adventure that shows how standing up for a friend is not only courageous, sometimes it is necessary. Max and Randolph stand up to a bully and learn a valuable lesson along the way. In the meantime, the bully learned a lesson too. Although the improbable happens throughout the book, I liked how the author managed to keep it all in the present, like a parallel plane. A cute tale that told a hidden story about loyalty and friendship.
