The Children of Heaven by Reni Stankova is a sweeping and emotionally resonant finale to The Heaven Trilogy. We find ourselves in a world torn between celestial duty and personal desire, where Raphael and Dante must defy heaven itself to forge a new reality, and it's one that embraces freedom, love, and choice. As the angel Michael Azelys awakens powers that threaten to reignite the Great War, Raphael becomes the last hope for demonkind’s liberation. Meanwhile, Dante ventures across the desolate Impact Land, seeking allies in a final stand against tyranny. With love, rage, and sacrifice, this is a queer epic that challenges divine order and human destiny alike.
Author Reni Stankova has a way of telling a story that draws you into the stakes immediately through powerful characters and their plights, and this is a poetic and emotional end to a trilogy that will give fans of the series everything they need to feel gripped, thrilled, and satisfied. It can be tricky to write LGBTQ romance well, without it becoming gimmicky or tokenistic, and in this story, it’s treated with depth and tenderness, and then given a new high fantasy gravitas that makes us root for the couple to succeed even more. The worldbuilding is set up to help this situation and egg us on in our support of them, and it’s boldly visual and poignant in the ways that it dares to reimagine angels and demons in striking new attitudes and viewpoints. Overall, The Children of Heaven is a highly recommended read that’s perfect for fans of dark fantasy who are invested in themes of rebellion, identity, and love.
