The Corvid and the Calico is a work of fiction in the fantasy, animals, and adventure subgenres. It is intended for young independent readers and was penned by author Raven J. Demers with illustrations provided by artist Luis Silva. In this charming tale, we meet two animal familiars of the same witch, who goes missing under mysterious circumstances. Nutmeg the cat and Bristle the raven must put aside their difference to find their witch, fighting danger along the way and figuring out the true meaning of family. What results is a charming family-oriented tale about working together and seeing the job through.
Author Raven J. Demers has produced a lovely chapter book for young independent readers that would suit reading at home, but could also be a great tale for the classroom with many interesting and meaningful talking points. I was especially fond of Nutmeg the cat, whose attitude is a little spinier than the typical protagonist of children’s tales, but is nonetheless charming and has a heart of gold really. The occasional illustrations by artist Luis Silva are a truly delightful touch, singling out key moments such as the arrival of significant characters. The black and white images convey personality and emotion that pairs well with the smooth prose, which, though delivered in simpler vocabulary for child readers, also has suitable layers of emotional complexity. For a fantastic read about friendship, family, and the power of working together, readers need look no further than The Corvid and the Calico for their next adventure.
