The Crossover Test by Joseph Schwartz features two brothers - James and Rory Conrad, who were found by their adoptive mother, wandering along a road as children. They have no memory of their past or where they came from. Their new mother, however, is a kind of witch who implants false memories in their minds to help them fill in the blanks. Now as adults, they make a cross country trip to try to find their mother, who has gone AWOL, and to visit their father's grave. Along the way, strange events unfold that will ultimately lead to them uncovering their past and confronting a terrifying evil.
Joseph Schwartz creates a new kind of supernatural narrative with shape-shifters and curious death omens in The Crossover Test. James and Rory have a good dynamic and you can believe they are brothers. They are very different, but they rely on each other. James is ex-army and is slightly broken by the experience. He deals with his problems by drinking a lot. Rory is a recovering addict who is trying to put his life back together. Their adoptive mother has magical abilities and is a tough character who, even when facing her own demise, still fights for her boys. The shape shifter is an interesting creature. Calling itself the Interfector, it can change into other people to carry out its mission, which is killing people with special abilities. The story had a hint of Stephen King's Desperation about it, but is its own story and worthwhile reading.
