I’m usually, but not always a little disappointed with faith based fiction. At some point, something is lacking or not quite up to par with their mainstream contemporaries. That is one of the biggest reasons I enjoyed The Devil’s Work by Jack McGugart so much. The plot was laid out as well as a Robert Ludlum novel. The characters were very realistically portrayed. The lead character, Tommy McDonald, is a Christian, but he’s not what some people might call an “over the top” Christian, someone too good to operate effectively in the real world. Tommy is a regular good guy with the principles and lifestyle of someone you would label a good man, whether he was a Christian or not. But when he comes across what he thinks is a conspiracy of literally Biblical proportions, he has to choose whether to back off and walk away, or stand up for what he knows is right.

I like the writing style of The Devil’s Work. Jack McGugart has a talent for portraying everyday scenes of American life, but when it’s time to move on to the surreal and violent scenes necessary to a suspense novel, he paints those well too. I have often thought that the Bible is probably the most quotable book ever written, at least in the English language, especially if you want to add gravity to the mood, and Jack chose the quotes that preceded every chapter very well indeed. You can’t have a suspense novel without suspense and one key to that is pacing. Jack McGugart takes his time, slowly feeding us the necessary details, then finishes with a powerful punch. The Devil’s Work should please any conspiracy and suspense book lover, whether they are Christian or not.
