The Eclipse of a Black Sun by Suzanne Cowles is a speculative fiction story that focuses on the mysterious deaths of people who appear to be extremely elderly, but the corpses may not be what they seem. Mixing elements of science fiction and fantasy together, the author creates a fascinating multi-layered plot which ties together convincingly even though the story is short. It is very much a plot-driven piece with a variety of different characters and settings, each contributing their part to the story and to the uncovering of the overall mystery. It also touches on the themes of the fast-paced nature of modern life and relationships, as well as poking fun at the corporate health industry.
The story is pacy and author Suzanne Cowles is especially talented with dialogue, which makes for engaging reading as exposition of the plot occurs in every chapter. The relationships between the characters (both overt and secret) are interesting but not overdone and the short story has a perfect balance of information that keeps the plot moving forward, but never weighs the reader down. Overall, I’d say it’s an excellent little read, errors notwithstanding, and I’d highly recommend it to science fiction and fantasy fans.
