The Ghost of the Deserted House is part of the Active Kids series by Tuula Pere. Oliver always enjoys his holidays at the family's summer cottage. He can go fishing, look for small wild animals, and read his comics in the abandoned house next door when he just wants to relax. The house's attic has an old hammock; it is not too hot there, and the mosquitoes are much fewer. When Oliver's friend Liam visits him at the cabin, Oliver is very excited to show him all the neat things they can do. When a storm breaks out, they go home to cook a delicious fish soup with the fish they have caught. When the boys suffer in the heat from continuous mosquito attacks, Oliver suggests that they sleep in the attic of the abandoned house. The boys fall asleep, but Liam's concern about ghosts becomes real when they wake up seeing a shape in the dark. What will the ghost in the attic do? Oliver did not tell his parents where they were. Will they be okay?

The Ghost of the Deserted House by Tuula Pere is fun, adventurous, and educational. The story's main lesson is to always inform your parents of your plans so they can be sure you are safe. The story has a laid-back feel that emphasizes how the children are relaxed and having fun. As the story develops, the illustrations and narrative create suspense, and I can imagine young children listening eagerly to learn what will happen to Oliver and Liam. The illustrations by Dane D'Angeli complement the narrative very well and add to reading enjoyment. Younger children will like hearing the story, while young readers will find it visually supported, enriching the story.
