The Great Squirrel Burglar by Mary Ellen Graham Wehrli and John L. Graham is the story of a squirrel, Grandpa Earl, who couldn’t remember where he hid his acorns and nuts. He enlists the help of his grandchild, or more precisely, his grandkit, and together they question other animals, including a rabbit, a cat, and a dog, about where the acorns and nuts might be, but to no avail. There are amusing interactions between the animals of different species as Earl questions them about his acorns and nuts. The squirrels finally find the missing acorns and nuts, but not before a twist, which takes place as a bird, a Cardinal, tells a story about the great squirrel burglar. Mary Ellen Graham Wehrli and John L. Graham are a sister-brother team. Their book contains numerous illustrations, which are drawn by Wehrli. At the end of the book, the authors include factual information about squirrels.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Great Squirrel Burglar. The authors, Mary Ellen Graham Wehrli and John L. Graham, don’t say what age the book is intended for, but it seems ideal for those children who are currently perfecting their reading skills. Younger children will enjoy having the book read to them and will also like the illustrations. As for the plot, it’s charming. I liked the twist near the end, which I won’t give away. But more importantly, the book teaches about family relationships and the need to help others. The illustrations, which are drawn by Mary Ellen Graham Wehrli, perfectly illustrate the text. I’m sure my children would have enjoyed either reading this book or having it read to them when they were young, and I recommend it to parents, grandparents, and of course, children.

A delightful, beautifully illustrated story. Perfect for grandparents to read to children. Fun for all.
