William Short’s The Griffin’s Ring: Beginnings follows Griffin “Fin” Short, an Australian teenager whose move to Clandesnoir, Maryland, begins with his mother’s disappearance and a gold ring she leaves behind. The ring transforms Fin’s body overnight. Soon he can hear animals, while its griffin emblem marks him as the first bearer of its kind seen in centuries. Searching for answers brings him closer to Mary Green and her cousin Luke, two new friends who know far more about the city’s hidden world than Fin expects. Their help leads him to a secret laboratory connected to the magical rings and the Shadow Council his mother warned him about. When Fin crosses Boris Nikita, the Dragon ruling Clandesnoir’s underworld, finding his mother becomes tangled with a war that could decide who rules the entire city.

William Short’s The Griffin’s Ring: Beginnings is brilliant urban fantasy, and Short is at his best when Fin’s friendships change the direction he takes. Mary questions his plans and forces him to think past the first idea in his head, which makes their scenes lively and gives Fin someone who can genuinely push back. Tom’s telepathic cat is the real star of this book, and that dry humor had me doing a chef's kiss every time. His commentary keeps that friendship group funny, especially when his certainty is completely out of proportion to what anyone else is doing. I also love Fin’s late alliance with Detective Vincent Affleck because the man who spent so long hunting the Griffin’s Shadow finally has to see the person behind the mask, while Fin has to trust someone he had every reason to avoid. Well written and enormously entertaining, readers who enjoy superhero-flavored urban fantasy will adore this.
