Upon being reunited with her father following his release from a re-education camp, she discovers that he has been transformed, his gentle nature replaced by a harsh and unforgiving demeanor that continues to wreak havoc on their lives even after they move to America. Vi's experiences lead her to rebel, causing her to question her Vietnamese culture, and seek freedom and self-discovery.
