The Journey of the Ascending Rose by Kathleen Ho recounts the touching tale of Vi, a young Vietnamese girl whose life is forever altered by the devastating impact of war. Separated from her parents, Vi is forced to reside with her grandparents amid chaos and destruction, confronting the harsh realities of war, including the cries of her people and the sounds of exploding bombs in the distance. Upon being reunited with her father following his release from a re-education camp, she discovers that he has been transformed, his gentle nature replaced by a harsh and unforgiving demeanor that continues to wreak havoc on their lives even after they move to America. Vi's experiences lead her to rebel, causing her to question her Vietnamese culture, and seek freedom and self-discovery.

The Journey of the Ascending Rose is a thought-provoking and engaging story that explores intricate social themes such as trauma, cultural identity, and assimilation. The diverse cast of characters with unique personalities and motivations adds depth and richness to the narrative.
